A Beginner’s Guide To Collecting Coins

Collecting coins is both fascinating and rewarding. But a lot of people have the idea that this hobby is only for the rich. You’d be surprised to know that there are tons of collectors out there of different income groups, nationalities, genders, and age. Here are some tips to get you started.

The first tip is to go with what you like. Begin with coins or series of coins that truly interest you: whether it’s the history behind it, the design, or where it came from. Most new collectors begin with world coins, which is a great starting place.

Every coin collector should start small. Keep it simple and ease yourself into the hobby before spending tons of money on big purchases. Begin with coin sets that are known to be easy to put together, like Lincoln pennies. With this comes lots of research on their history, how to grade them, and the pricing.

Handle and store your coins properly. Don’t be lulled into thinking that since they are made of metal, you can just leave them lying around or stored in some drawer. Coin surfaces are very delicate and can be easily damaged. Remember that proper handling and storage techniques will add value to your coins. That’s why we have the “mint condition” expression.

Lastly, become a member of a coin club. This is the single best way to learn new things, fuel your passion for coins, and avoid fakes and rip-offs. There are many such clubs all over the U.S., and a quite internet search will bring you to the American Numismatic Association (ANA), the largest organization for numismatic education in the country.
